What is a Doula?
A doula (pronounced doo-la) is a woman who assists another woman during labor and provides support to her, the infant, and the family, before and after childbirth. A doula is also an advocate for the family, in that she helps them to have the kind of birth they want. She provides advice, information, and emotional support. She is not there in any way to take over the experience, but rather to help create a supportive, nurturing environment and birth team. Before the birth I like to discuss with the couple their feelings about the upcoming birth and how they envision it happening. We discuss any fears or concerns, and I offer helpful information, such as suggestions on relevant readings and classes. During the birth I offer massage/accupressure, guidance with breathing and laboring positions, and support to create a warm, safe, and comfortable environment. After the birth I am here to help the couple in the "bonding process" with the new baby and I can offer support with nursing and comfort measures. View my Doula Agreement [pdf] » |

Mary was there when I needed her and helped me give birth with confidence. She is a very kind, sensitive and knowledgeable person who brought a
sense of calm reassurance to the birth in a very non intrusive way. I have had 3 babies and birthed with 3 doulas and Mary was by far the
best because I felt very comfortable with her. She didn't conflict with the hospital in any way, she was well prepared and she was always available to me. I would recommend Mary as a doula to any expectant mom.
